KEEP AWAY FROM CLIFFS – ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S DARK

Brixham coastguard is reminding people enjoying our coastline in the hot summer weather to stay away from cliff edges – especially when it’s dark. Their warning comes after a young man fell 100 feet from a cliff near Whitsand Bay near Plymouth at just after half past two this morning.

South Western Ambulance Service contacted Brixham Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to report that they were dealing with a young man who fallen from cliffs near Whitsand Bay Holiday Park. Because of his position on the cliffs the Coastguard Rescue Teams from Looe and Tamar were sent to the scene with the Royal Navy Rescue Helicopter based at Chivenor.
After receiving medical attention on scene the young man was taken by helicopter to hospital in Plymouth.

Brixham coastguard Watch Manager Dave Scullion said:
“Cliff edges can be dangerous during daylight hours as they can be slippery and prone to erosion. They become even more dangerous during the hours of darkness when it’s often difficult to see the edge and you can easily just take a step into the void.

“Please stay away from these paths and if you, or a friend, does get into difficulty call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
