Helicopter captures HM Coastguard Rescue Teams rescuing man knee deep in mud

Humberside Coastguard helicopter has captured HM Coastguard Rescue Teams safely rescuing a man knee deep in mud from Cleethorpes Beach yesterday afternoon.

At 2.20pm yesterday (22 February) HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting that a man was stuck knee deep in mud after attempting to rescue his dog who was chasing seagulls near the water's edge at Cleethorpes.

Cleethorpes, Donna Nook and Hull Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent to the scene, alongside Humberside Coastguard helicopter who had just finished a previous incident which saw two men rescued from a sinking vessel off Hornsea coast.

HM Coastguard Senior Maritime Operations Officer Ryan Douglas said: “The person who called 999 and asked for the Coastguard did exactly the right thing when they realised the man was getting into difficulty in the mud.  We believe it was the dog's first day at the beach and he got a little overexcited about the prospect of all the seagulls in the area.  Thankfully, this incident ended with the man being safely rescued by our Coastguard Rescue Teams, and requiring no medical treatment.

“We would always advise people try and keep their dogs on leads near cliffs and the beach.  If they pick up the scent of an animal or hear something on the coast it doesn’t take much for them to follow their nose.  Above all, if your dog does fall down a cliff or starts getting swept out to sea, please do not attempt to rescue it yourself.  Nine times out of ten your dog will rescue itself and return to shore alive, but tragically some owners do not.  Our Coastguards are trained in all types of rescue on the coast, including dog rescues, so leave the rescue to the experts to carry out.”
